PSY 324 Chapter Notes - Chapter 12: Ventromedial Prefrontal Cortex, Autonomic Nervous System, Prefrontal Cortex
Document Summary
The amygdala (part of the temporal lobe) responds quickly to emotional stimuli and damage to it interferes with attention to information that is relevant to emotions regulates anxiety. Stressful events arouse the sympathetic nervous system (part of autonomic n. s. ) and later the adrenal cortex. Emotions involved conscious feelings that we cannot observe. This is dangerous + i feel scared + run away common sense view. James-lange theory frightening situation running away/heart racing etc. Event appraisal (cognitive part) action (behavioural aspect, including physiology), emotional feeling. Two predictions: people with weak autonomic/skeletal systems should feel less emotion and causing/increasing someone"s responses should enhance an emotion. Emotions are embodied emotional feelings requires some action and perception of that action. People with spinal cord injuries cannot move their arms/legs below the level of damage. Most report feeling of emotions about the same as before their injury. Finding: emotions do not require feedback from muscle movements.
