May lead to cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, arthritis, type 2 diabetes, cancers, periodontal disease, frailty, functional decline, neurocognitive disorder. Mental illness is an important risk factor. Other factors divorce, financial hardship, illness, loss or lack of support. 2009: 9th leading cause of death (3890 adults) Men are 3x more likely to commit suicide than women. 40-59 yo have the highest suicide rates.
