PSY 606 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Mental Disorder
Document Summary
Chapter 3 classification and assessment of abnormal behaviour. In the dsm, abnormal behaviour patterns are classified as mental disorders that involve either emotional distress (typically depression or anxiety) &/or significant psychological impairment (e. g. impaired psychological function = difficulty meeting family, work, social responsibilities) Dsm relies strongly with the medical model, but recognizes disorders of a multifactorial model (biological, psychological, and social socioeconomic, sociocultural, and ethnic) People who bereave or grief after death of loved one are not considered disordered even if their behaviour is significantly impaired. However, if it remains impaired over an extended period of time, a diagnosis of mental disorder can be appropriate. Psychological disorders term used instead of mental disorders. Dsm is used to classify disorders, not people. An individual with schizophrenia or a person with major depression is more appropriate.
