Principle of charity (pc) - when reconstructing an argument, try to formulate a reconstruction that is well- formed, has reasonable premises, and is undefeated: distinguish arguments from nonarguments. Two kinds of writing easily confused with arguments writing are: descriptive writing is writing in which the author merely describes some event. Author makes no attempt to establish the truth of any particular claim. Newspaper: rhetorical writing expresses a point of view about a topic and contains nothing designed to show the truth of its point of view. It simply asserts the authors views, perhaps forcefully and emotionally. Sometimes a passage contains sections that are argumentative and others are descriptive or rhetorical.
