Socialization: lifelong process of social interaction through which individuals acquire a self-identity and the physical, mental, and social skills needed for survival in society. Members of society must socialize to maintain existing social structure. Functional perspective: individual conformity to existing norms is not taken for granted. Being human includes being conscious of ourselves as individuals with unique identities, personalities, and relationships with others. Sociobiology is the systematic study of how biology affects social behaviour. Isolation in nonhuman primates: is detrimental, instinct to cling to mother substitute even if hungry until hunger drove them to the bottle. Humans rely more heavily on social learning, thus process of socialization is even more important. Isolated children: children who suffered emotional abuse provide insight to importance of positive socialization process and negative effects of social isolation. Neglect is the most frequent form of child abuse, occurs when child"s basic needs are not met.
