SOC 603 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Central Nervous System, Autonomic Nervous System, Sympathetic Nervous System
Document Summary
Stress, health & well-being; thriving in the 21st century. Stress and emotional reactions are intimately tied to physiological processes. The human nervous system is divided into two branches: the central nervous system (cns) and the peripheral nervous system (pns) o o. The cns involves the brain and the spinal cord. The pns involves all the other neural pathways (all other nerves that cover the rest of the body) and is divided into two main branches: the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system. The somatic nervous system supplies nerves to the voluntary muscles of the body (i. e. biceps, quads, etc. ) The autonomic nervous system innervates the organ systems of the body, the viscera. It has two main branches: the sympathetic and the parasympathetic. The sympathetic branch is what we most closely associate with the fight or flight response. Its spinal nerves include the thoracic and lumbar regions (middle regions) of the spinal column.
