Circulation I The functions and components of the human cardiovascular and lymphatic systems General route of blood Arteries, veins, capillaries, atria, ventricles Nature & function of blood Components of blood CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM General Route of Blood Veins  atria  ventricles  arteries  lungs/body  arterioles  capillaries  venules  veins  ♡ Artery • A vessel carrying blood away from the ♡ to the lungs and rest of body • Fairly thick muscular walls • Generally elastic Vein • A vessel carrying blood back to the ♡ from the lungs and body • Thinner muscular and elastic layers compared to arteries Capillaries • Networks of small vessels that intermingle with tissues • Delivers nutrients and removes waste • The intermediate vessel that joins arterioles to venules Atria • The two smaller upper chambers of the ♡ • Receives blood from veins • Pumps this blood into ventricles via valves Ventricles • The two larger, lower chambers of the ♡ • Atria  ventricles  arteries  lungs/body Transport, regulation, and protection NATURE & FUNCTION OF BLOOD Nature • A connective tissue containing cells and cell fragments in a liquid matrix • 7-8% of body weight • ~6 liters Functions • Transport – Gases – Nutrients – Processed molecules – Hormones – Waste materials • Regulation – pH – Temperature – Osmosis (fluid/ion balance) • Protection – Blood clotting – WBC and antibodies for defense Cells, plasma, and platelets COMPONENTS OF BLOOD Cells • Erythrocytes (RBC) - 5million per μL • Leukocytes (WBC) - 8000 per μL – Neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils Plasma • Acellular, pale yellow colloidal fluid • Functions: – Carry blood cells in circulation – Transport nutrients to tissues and carry away waste materials – Maintain acid-base balance of blood – Effect intercellular communicat
