Intimate relationships important for physical and emotional wellness. Married people in general have lower mortality rates than unmarried. Meta-analysis (study that combines and re-analyze other studies) find that never- married people have an average of 24% increased mortality rate. Married people (and people in stable intimate relationships) Selection: healthy people are more likely to become married. Health habits (eat more regularly, fewer sex partners, less likely to drink and drive) Married people have much lower cancer mortality rate. Support: spouse may provide a built-in source of support. Children: raising children appear to have positive effect on cancer survival, most likely because they induce healthier lifestyle. Selection: healthy individuals more likely to enter into marriage. Values: avoiding risky health behaviours, less likely to divorce. Canadian age at first marriage increased, which causes women to have children later (decrease birth rate) Living together before marriage does not change divorce rate. #1 = death of spouse / family member.
