Power is not necessarily a zero-sum game. Sharing power may in fact increase everyone"s power. Power = capacity that a has to influence behaviour of b, so that b acts in accordance w/ a"s wishes. The greater b"s dependence on a, greater a"s power. Dependence based on alternatives b perceives & importance b places on alternatives a controls. Person can have power only if he/she controls sth you desire. Coercive power = power based on fear of negative results that might occur if one fails to comply. Rests on application/threat of application of physical sanctions. I. e. pain, controlling by force basic physiological/safety needs, etc. In orgs, can come from withholding info/having knowledge others need. Reward power = power that achieves compliance based on ability to distribute rewards that others view as valuable. Legitimate power = power that person receives as a result of his/her position in formal hierarchy of an org.
