Runs counter in various ways to most of surveillance practices. Chapter will argue that, although unusual, broadcast of footage has important impacts. Is also highly suggestive example of some broader processes. As media product, surveillance camera footage has various qualities making it resonate in wider culture. Footage important in reinforcing particular prominent system of meaning about crime. Images of cj presented by slices of footage have lots in common w/ how crime portrayed in news & entertainment media more generally. Yet are not simply more of the same. Medium theory helps us but needs to be reworked into something more critical to show how properties of tv & video work in interaction w/ key institutional players. Although analysis of surveillance usually couched in language & metaphors of vision & visibility, most contemporary surveillance does not involve literally watching subject.
