CMNS 110 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Synesthesia, Sensorium
Document Summary
Any human artefacts (art/production techniques) involve communication: create complex background of environmental conditions and related technologies which we are mostly unaware of. Technology is an extension of human senses. Effect of media on our consciousness is the process of synaesthesia: free interaction amongst five senses and the mind"s normal means of translating one sense into another. Ideal state of consciousness is when all components of sensorium remain in balance: consciousness will seek closure by diminishing other senses to numb the amplified sense, need for closure could cause bias towards dominant medium. Medium = unconscious effect of our adaptation to environments created by our technologies. The medium is the message: medium through which we choose to communicate holds as much, if not more, value than the message itself. Shapes user"s perception of the message: medium through which content is carried plays a vital role in the way it is perceived.
