CRIM 103 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Classical Conditioning, Psychopathy, Monoamine Oxidase A
Document Summary
Empathy - in research, perceived as existing along 2 dimensions. Emotional response shown through feelings of concern for another & desire to relieve distress. Ability to understand person from his/her point of view. Affective empathy - ability to experience someone else"s emotions. Cognitive empathy - ability to understand someone else"s emotions. One can possess both types of empathy. Deficiencies in empathy have been considered characteristic of antisocial individuals for a long time. Psychopaths believed to be able to understand emotions of others but not to experience them. Girls generally show both dimensions of empathy before boys. Begins at second year of life & continues to at least adolescence. Children demonstrating little empathy in early age show even less later on. Studies found that deficiency in emotional empathy most strongly related to violence. High frequency male & female offenders show lower affective empathy than low rate offenders. People who abuse animals rarely stop there (pg43)
