CRIM 104 Chapter 9: Crim 104-Reading 9
Document Summary
Techniques of neutralization is an explanation or an elaboration on the types of rationalizations or excuses that criminals actually learn during this process. Sykes and matza, unlike cohen, states that delinquents are unlikely to substitute a new set of unconventional norms for the conventional norms that are widely accepted by most members. Delinquency subscribes to some degree to the dominant social norms. Delinquents may even admire and respect law abiding people like their parents. They also have an understanding of what is fair game and what is not: they do not steal from friends and they do not vandalize churches. They know what they are doing is wrong and attempt to justify their behavior. The content of what is learned as opposed to the process by which it is learned has received relatively little attention in either theory or research.
