Aboriginal people face many problems due to effects of colonialism, past discriminatory and paternalistic government policies policies and legislation intended to assimilate them into the general population. Aboriginal people have the highest rates of offences, arrests, and incarceration rates of any ethnic group. Urban aboriginal residents are often characterized by high rates of poverty, unemployment, standard housing, and poor participation in formal educational systems (rates of substance abuse is high) On reserve rate for violent crimes is 8x the violent crime rates of the rest of the country.
