Most important duties of first responders : ensure emergency medical personnel have access to and from the scene, secure and protect crime scene, establish continuity of the scene and evidence. Method-oriented special units units distinguished by specialized equipment and tactics: i. e. , emergency response teams (erts), strike force units, bomb squads. Staff various specialty units in a police service. More common units = homicide, fraud, auto theft, robbery. Attempt to apprehend offenders before additional offences are committed. Investigative follow=up roles or conduct further inquiries themselves. Ccc and provincial legislation give officers authority to freeze/hold crime scene for a prescribed length of time. Work in high demand, high-stress environments that place them at high risk of burnout. Exacerbated by lack of resources, high case loads, increasing complexity of criminal investigations, and challenge meeting requirements of legislation and court decision.
