EDUC 315 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Vocal Tract, Vocal Folds, Phonation
Document Summary
Sending and receiving of messages, info, ideas and feelings. Extralinguistic behaviours- humans have the capacity for speech. Coded symbols refer to meanings/ real things- symbols represent the referents. Code used and agreed on by a community (language is a convention) Rules guide the code symbols -finite number of rules. Sensorimotor processes, reproduce coded symbols so they are audible. Sounds patterns are created- result of respiration, phonation, resonation and articulation. Resonation: modification of the vocal tone - changing shape/size of space in vocal tract. Articulators: tongue, jaw, lips- used to modify sound (vowel or consonant) Language is the code; speech is the sensorimotor production of that code. Paralinguistic: melodic components of speech; stress, pitch and intonation. suprasegmental devices. Nonlinguistic: (non verbal communication) important for interpersonal relationships. 2)semantics - referents and meanings. superordinate and subordinate categories. relationship of words in order to get logical sentences. 3)syntax - determine what words can go together to convey meaning.
