Chapter 3 mental health examined through the social sciences. Social sciences use methods of scieniic inquiry: careful and systemaic data collecion, analysis and interpretaion: eg: social sciences anthro, crim, econ, geo, history, poli sci, psych, socio, eg: physical sciences bio, chem, neuroscience. Theories of individual and group behaviour: psychoanalysis developed by sigmund freud. Human behaviour can be understood only under the level of awareness, the unconscious mind. We are in struggle with our id (insinctual drives aggression, sexual desire) and superego (societal norms and cultural invenions) Usually repress out id into a level of unconsciousness: alfred adler labelled the inferiority complex the way social structure may cause humans to feel helpless/powerless. Need for humans to overcome the inferiority complex and increase personal power/self-esteem: carl jung took the collecive unconsciousness to show us diferent ways we might be in the world.
