LING 401 Chapter 5: Article Discussion 5 - Moore & Jongman, 1997
Document Summary
Ling 401 article discussion 5 - moore & jongman, 1997. The journal of the acoustical society of america, 102(3), 1864-1877. Listeners are able to normalize what a speaker says. Means that sounds with very similar acoustic features may be perceived as different vowels. Or that the same vowel will be realized quite differently across different speakers, depending on vocal tract size, and other factors. Previous research shows: speakers use extrinsic information about speaker identity to classify vowels. Previous research also shows that altering the formants for consonants preceding a vowel can alter how the speaker perceives the vowel. Unclear from previous research how acoustic information was being used in speaker normalization. Purpose of this study: normalization in terms of suprasegmentals - focus on lexical tone. Whether f0 range as a cue to speaker identity influences perception of tones 2 and 3. Few studies before have investigated the role of extrinsic f0 in tone perception and particularly in speaker normalization.
