Components of neuron cell body (soma) cells in nervous system that communicate with one another to perform information-processing tasks. Coordinated info-processing tasks & keeps cell alive. Protein synthesis, energy production, metabolism occur here. Contains nucleus houses chromosomes that contain dna. Surrounded by porous cell membrane that allows some molecules to flow into/out of cell. 2 types of specialized extensions of cell membrane what allow them to communicate. Axon receive info from other neurons & relay it to cell body look like tree branches carries info to other neurons, muscles, glands can be very long covered by myelin sheath. Others provide physical & nutritional support for neurons. Others form myelin to help axon carry info more efficiently one insulated with myelin can more effectively transmit signals to other neuron, organs, muscles (pg. Juc"n/region between axon of 1 neuron & dendrites/cell body of another. Work together in small circuits to perform simple & complicated tasks.
