From the first half of the course, you"ve hopefully developed a good general sense of how risk assessment works and particularly how it"s grounded in research. In addition to the prediction of violence, one of the important purposes of risk assessment is prevention. To this end, a number of strategies and guidelines for violence prevention or risk management have been developed. As you"re moving through the material, look out for how risk factors connect to risk assessment and connect to risk management. This week"s readings will present theory and research on risk management targets and principles. In both cases, the readings provide an intro through risk assessment, which you can skim since we covered these in some detail earlier in the course. Focus primarily on the general types of strategies and management principles; although the specific examples of these will help you better understand them.
