Its audience is the academic world of sociology department, academic journals, professional associations, and conferences. Critical sociology: challenges both established sociological theories and the research that sociologists do. Addresses the same audience that professional sociology does but with a different purpose. Aim: do not lose sight of important social issues by focusing on statistics while over looking the individuals behind them. Policy sociology: generating sociological data for governments and large corporations to be used in developing laws, rules and long + short term plans. Tougher sentences or better rehabilitation programs are more likely to reduce the rate of criminal reoffering. 3 main areas: education, health and social welfare. Public sociology: addresses an audience outside of the academy (university and college)
