PSYC 1020H Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Reward System, Drug Tolerance, Classical Conditioning
Document Summary
To a psychologist, learning is any relatively durable change in behaviour or knowledge that is due to experience. Superstitions are often the result of obtaining a reward after engaging in some behaviour, even if the behaviour and reward are not really linked. Superstitions have been the subject of scientific learning research and are an example of what psychologists are referring to when they use the term learning- in this case, a type of learning known as operant conditioning. Phobias are irrational fears of specific objects or situations and are often the result of another learning process termed classical conditioning. Phobias are a type of anxiety disorders (anxiety disorders effect about 1 in 10 canadians) Rate for social phobia is 6. 7 percent. Learning is one of the most fundamental concepts in all of psych. Phobias can be treated or can end on their own. The principles that explain learned responses in animals explain much of human learning, too.
