PSYC 1020H Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Chemotherapy, Reinforcement, Operant Conditioning
Document Summary
Russian physiologist, ivan pavlov, studied salivation in dogs for a part of his. 0ne of his procedures connected a tube to measure salivation. Pavlov used many stimuli to cause salivation. Pavlov overlooked a small pattern, which a student observed. Eventually, many dogs would come to the procedure drooling before the stimuli. After this breakthrough, he dropped his discipline and continued studying conditioning. Pavlov initially speculated the dogs feelings because of their pre-salivation. Pavlov then moved to studying the environment. Original salivations consists of unconditioned stimulus (the original salivary reflex of food in the dogs mouth) and an unconditioned response (salivation) This leads to discovering automatically produced (see food, you drool) Neutral stimulus becomes conditioned stimulus that is automatically linked to the unlearned response. Stimulus that are conditioned can be tampered with in many ways: extinction. Though they cannot be forgotten or unlearned, responses to stimulus can be wary. Through sessions, you can become desensitized to the underlying stimulus.
