What are the three steps in the process of stratification: categorization/differentiation and the construction of social categories, ranking of categorical groups, unequal treatment in the distribution of resources. Process of placing persons into categories based on some actual or perceived characteristic. Part of a process of social construction. Enforces the categories by focusing on difference. Stratification is a problem because it leads to oversimplification and overgeneralization, and stereotypes and prejudice. An unfair negative attitude toward a social group or a person perceived to be a member of that group. Predetermined emotional orientation toward an individual or object. Prejudice is an attitude with a cognitive and affective component. Consciously endorsed, where the actor is aware of the attitude. Unconscious and the actor does not always have control over them.
