Historical perspectives on youth crime and juvenile justice. Very conservative person tied to church, want to maintain family values. At time of book counterculture movement, gay/lesbian rights, women"s rights, racial rights etc: he saw this as a challenge to the nuclear family (center family around child, women demanding reproductive rights, workforce etc. All a threat: he wanted to preserve the family, and his ideology coloured his view of childhood. We have increased the span of childhood and adolescence. Argument #1 aries (travelling: childhood was discovered in western europe in the 17th century, nothing natural about this. Evidence that childhood did not exist until 17th and 18th c: children were integrated into family life. Evident in the type of clothing worn by children in portraits (adult) Argument #2 aries: high infant mortality discouraged parents from growing attached to ofspring. Emotional investment: wet nursing protected parents from the emotional trauma associated with losing a child.
