BIOL 1080 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Lymphatic System, Blood Proteins, Capillary
Document Summary
Transportation of vital materials, and carries away cellular wastes. White blood cells (leukocytes) help to protect agains disease-causing organisms. Blood clotting helps to protect against excessive blood loss. Buffers in the blood help regulate the acid-base balance of body uids. Blood regulates body temperature by absorbing heat and distributing to colder regions, and the skin (where heat gets dissipated). Blood functions to transport, protect, and regulate. Urea from protein breakdown are carried to the kidneys, where they can be excreted. Blood also transports carbon dioxide from the cells where it is produced to the lungs to be released. Plasma proteins- most of the dissolved proteins in blood. Plasma proteins help to balance water ow between the blood and cells (without it water would be drawn out of the blood). 3 types of plasma proteins: albumins: make up more than half of the plasma proteins. Important in the blood"s water-balancing ability. globulins: has a variety of functions.
