BIOL 1500 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Bovine Somatotropin, Transfer Rna, Base Pair
Document Summary
Chapter 9: genetic engineering (1) 177-183: genetically modified organisms: Scientists can move a gene known to produce a certain protein from one organism to another. Regulating the amount of protein produced by a cell is also referred to as regulating gene expression. From gene to protein: protein synthesis is joining amino acids together, in an order dictated by a gene to produce a protein. Genes carry info that dictates how a protein should be built. Nucleotides make chemical bonds with each other based on their complimentary: (a) to thymine (t) and cytosine (c) to guanine (g). Chemical properties of amino acids cause a protein to fold in a particular manner. When the gene is copied, the copy is made up of rna which is a polymer of nucleotides, the sugar in rna is ribose. Rna is produced using dna as a template.
