BIOM 2000 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1-2: Tight Junction, Male Reproductive System, Cell Membrane
Document Summary
Maintaining boundaries: every cell is surrounded by an external membrane, the body is enclosed by the integumentary system or skin. It protects the internal organs from drying out, bacteria, sunlight and chemical substances in the external environment. Responsiveness: ability to sense changes (stimuli) & react to them, nerve cells are highly irritable & can communicate quickly with each other via electrical impulses, the nervous system bears the major responsibility for responsiveness. Digestion: process of breaking down ingested food into simple molecules so they can be absorbed in the blood, nutrient blood is distributed to all body cells by the cardiovascular system. Growth: cell-constructing activities must occur at a faster rate then cell-destroying ones, hormones released by the endocrine system play a major role in directing growth. Oxygen: chemical reactions that release energy from foods require oxygen. Atmospheric pressure- the force exerted on the surface of the body by the weight of air.
