BIOM 2000 Chapter muscles: Unit 3 Notes (Online Class)
Document Summary
Three types of muscle- skeletal, cardiac and smooth. Differ in cell structure, body location and how they are stimulated. Skeletal and smooth muscles are elongated- called muscle fibers. The ability of muscle to shorten or contract depends on two types of micro filaments. Prefixes myo- and mys- (muscle) and sarco- (flesh): means muscle is being referred to. Skeletal muscle fibres are packed into skeletal muscle that attach to the body"s skeleton. Help form the much smoother contours of the body. Also known as striated muscle (because of obvious stipes) and voluntary muscle (because it is the only type subject to conscious control) Tires easy and must rest after short periods of activity. They don"t rip apart when exerting force because of their fibers that are bundled together by connective tissue. Each muscle fiber is enclosed by a connective sheath called endomysium. Perimysium form a bundle of fibers called a fascicle.
