Organs include nose, pharynx, trachea, bronchi and their smaller branches, and the lungs which contain the alveoli. Gas exchange in the blood happen only in the alveoli. Other passageways purify, humidify and warm incoming air. Only external visable part of the respiratory system. Air enters through the nostrils or nares and the nasal cavity is iviided by a midline nasal septum. The olfactory receptors for sense of smell are located in the mucosa in the slitlike superior part of the nasal cavity just benteath the ethmoid bone. The rest of the mucosa lining is called the respiratory mucosa and it rests on a rich netowrk of thin walled veins that warm air as it flows. The sticky mucus produced by mucosa glands moistens the air and traps incoming bacteria and other debris (lysozome enzymes) When its cold the cilia in the nostrils become sluggish.

One of the most common chronic conditions affecting the respiratory system is asthma. Asthma is a condition characterized by inflammation of the airways. When an asthma attack is triggered, the airways become even more inflamed and can restrict breathing.
