Organ systems work together to promote the well-being of the entire body. Every cell is surrounded by an external membrane that contains its contents while only allowing needed substances in and keeping damaging substance out. Body as a whole is enclosed by skin which protects internal organs from drying out, from bacteria, and from heat, sunlight and chemicals. Skeletal systems provide the bones that the muscles pull on as they work. Movement occurs when blood, foodstuffs and urine are propelled through internal organs of the cardiovascular, digestive and urinary systems. Sense change (stimuli) in the environment and then to react to them. Nerve systems bear the major responsibility for responsiveness as they are highly irritable and can communicate rapidly through electrical impulses. Process of breaking down ingested food into simple molecules that can then be absorbed into the blood. Nutrient-rich blood is distributed to all body cells by the cardiovascular system.
