Stratification by age is the disengagement theory: the view that aging makes a person"s social sphere increasingly narrow, resulting in role relinquishment withdrawal, and passivity. Activity theory: the view that the elderly people want and need to remain in active social spheres-with relatives, friends and community groups-and become withdrawn only unwillingly as a result of ageism. In terms of gender, feminist theory draws that gender roles remain prominent in elderly people. Ethnicity also is stratification in terms of education, employment, health and place or residence, these all accumulate and create large discrepancies. This also is true for social economic status (ses) low ses is less education, worse health and poorer work history. Canadian seniors can access government transfer programs: old age security and guaranteed income. Activities in late adulthood: many elderly people are reluctant to give up employment however some become happier when they are retired. Some people ease into retirement by working part time.
