Dating used to be closely regulated by parents or other family members, and used to take place in the girl"s home. It was considered a serious commitment to marriage. After ww1, it became less supervised, and courtship was an important rite of passage in which young adults could refine gender roles, status, and identity. Dating had 4 stages: casual, steady, engagement, marriage. Due to employment, there was an increase in marriage but a decrease in the age at which one was married. Working class liked to marry young usually unemployed or poor job and finished education sooner. Dating was an essential stage of life with the goal of attaining a husband for women. Then, in the 1960"s, dating practices changed as women gained more freedom and independence. Men no longer always initiated the dates, planned it, or paid for it. There are spur of the moment activities, group dates, or hang outs.
