Individuals or subunits are mutually dependent on each other to accomplish their own goals the potential for conflict exists: can set stage for conflict for 2 reasons, necessitates interaction between parties so they can coordinate interests. Conflict won"t develop if parties can go it alone: interdependence implies each party has some power over the other. Differences in power status and culture: power- if dependence is not mutual potential for conflict increases, status status difference provide little impetus for conflict when people of lower status are dependent on those with higher status. There are occasions when employees with lower status find themselves giving orders to high status: culture clash in beliefs and values can result in overt conflict.
