The structures of the brain primarily responsible for retrieving stored memories is the frontal cortex and the hippocampus. As children grow they use more effective strategies for remembering and their growing factual knowledge of the world allows them to organize information more completely and therefor remember better. Children begin to use this strategy early, and preschool children touch and look at objects they have been told to remember. During elementary school, children begin to use more effective strategies. Rehearsal: a memory strategy that involves repeating information that is to be remembered. Repeating a phone number from the time they hear it til the time they need to use it.
