Culture influences timing of biological events, and respond in a variety of ways. Puberty the changes in physiology, anatomy, and physical functioning that develop a person into a mature adult biological and prepare the body for sexual reproduction. Network of glands in body which release hormones into bloodstream that affect development and functioning. Gonads ovaries and testes (sex glands), increase production of sex hormones: estrogens sex hormones high in females from puberty, responsible for female sex characteristics. Estradiol is most important in pubertal dev. (x8 in female, x2 in male: androgens sex hormones high in males. Testosterone is most important in pubertal dev. (x20 in male, x4 in female) Pituitary also releases adrenocorticotropic hormone causes adrenal glands to increase androgen production: androgens released by adrenal gland have same effects as those releases by testes.
