Week 2 readings geog 3050 (development and the city) Theories of urbanization; measuring and monitoring urbanization: exploring mobility and migration in the context of rural urban linkages: why gender and generation matter. This paper draws on case studies in mali, nigeria, tanzania and. Vietnam to explore the different ways in which migration intersects with the changing relations between rural and urban areas and activities, and in the process transforms livelihoods and the relations between young and older men and women. Gender and generational relations are key elements that both shape and are shaped by these transformative processes. Livelihood strategies are largely based on access to assets, which is itself mediated by economic, sociocultural and political normative systems that reflect evolving power relations between different groups. Research on livelihood strategies usually takes the household as the unit of analysis; while this has the benefit of highlighting the importance of pooling resources, it does however tend to neglect differences within the household.
