Swing was a national movement, but a separate movement headquartered in kansas city contributed to jazz enough moved the movement in a different direction. Many african-americans headed to the southwest in search of mining jobs, and some even founded black-only town in oklahoma. The boogie-woogie is a blues piano style that has a fast 8 beat bass line that leaves the right hand available to play whatever kind of blues the player wants. Territory bands were bands that worked within a geographic area of a one day"s drive of where they headquartered. The twelve clouds of joy led by tuba player andy kirk was a territory band that constantly toured making just enough money to survive, but caught a big break and signed with a record label in 1936. Mary lou williams played with the band one night after the pianists didn"t show up for a gig.
