The production of the cells of the blood. Senescent red cells spleen; granulocytes tissues; lymphocytes lymph nodes, spleen, other lymphoid tissue (or they can form a long lived circulating pool. Determined by taking samples from a normal population and counting cells, generating means and sd. Low or high number is the result of increased or decreased bone marrow production, intravascular destruction or exit. Assessment of bone marrow = bm biopsy and peripheral blood by venipuncture. Compare rbc mass to fluid in blood. Average rbc size measured = mean corpuscular volume (mcv) Measure of functional capacity = hemoglobin concentration. Weakness, pallor, reduced energy and exercise ability. Lack of production (bm disease, leukemia, chemotherapy, aplastic anemia) Rbc destruction (parasites such as malaria; hemolytic anemia) Blood loss (internal and external; hemorrhage anemia) Mild (canine pcv > 30), moderate (canine pcv 18-30), severe (pcv <18) Body cannot tolerate a rapid drop in rcc/pcv, severe anemia takes a long time to develop.
