Theory that behaviour and personality are shaped by powerful forces in consciousness and unconsciousness. We like to believe that when something embarrassing, immoral, or stupid happens, we are out of control of that happening (it was a mistake) In psychodynamic perspective there are no mistakes and we have very little control over ourselves and little insight into our own behaviour. Conscious mind: your current awareness, containing everything you are aware of right now. Unconscious mind: a much more vast and powerful but inaccessible part of your consciousness, operating without your conscious endorsement or will to influence and guide your behaviours. Unconscious mind houses full lifetime of memories and experiences including those that are not brought to conscious mind (ie. emotional patterns created in infancy) Also contains preferences and desires, thus having a powerful influence on motivation. The unconscious mind is thought to be much larger and more powerful than the conscious mind.
