PSYC 2310 Chapter Notes - Chapter 10: Netflix, Acculturation, Contact Hypothesis
Document Summary
Increased contact is most likely to be beneficial when other conditions are met including: providing equal status contact. Allport"s contact hypothesis one of the simplest ways to resolve group conflict is to increase interaction between people in different groups. However, bringing people from different groups together to interact in unequal ways, such as members of one group tutoring or working for members of another group, can maintain or increase conflict between groups. Reducing the conflict between groups needs to involve equal status conflict meaning that each group member contributes to the interaction on a level playing field: pursuing a superordinate goal. Another strategy for resolving conflict is to bring different groups together to work on a cooperative task so that the group outcome will depend on the input of all members of both groups. Sherif refers to this as superordinate goal. A goal that can only be achieved if the members of both groups cooperate.
