71 views5 pages

Document Summary

Stanley milgram conducted experiments (1963-65) to study the phenomenon of obedience to an authority figure. Participants reported to lab at yale university and were told the study would examine the effects of punishment on learning. One person would be a teacher, administering the punishment, and the other participant would be the learner ; however the assigning of roles was rigged and the other participant (accomplice in the experiment called mr. Wallace ) was always the learner and the volunteer was always the teacher. Wallace had to learn series of word pairs and was tested to see if he would remember which words went together. Every time wallace made a mistake, the teacher delivered a shock as a punishment; the first mistake was supposed to earn a 15 volt shock, the second a 30 volt shock and so on. Wallace never physically received any shocks, but the participants didn"t know that and believed they were actually hurting him.
