PSYC 2360 Chapter 3: Chapter 3
Document Summary
Protecting research participants from physical and psychological harm. Most participation in psychological research does not produce long-term psychological damage. Data should be kept anonymous makes respondants answer more honestly. In cases when data cannot be anonymous, make sure it is confidential (uses code numbers, etc) Honestly describing the nature and use of the research. Would be impossible to study phenomena like altruism, aggression and stereotyping without using deception. Sometimes more ethical to deceive participants into thinking they are in a stressful situation than actually inflicting stress on them. In simulation studies participants are informed about the nature of the research but asked to behave as if they were in a social setting of interest some are highly effective but most are not. Student who participated in experiments in which they were deceived report enjoying them more and receiving more educational benefits from them.
