PSYC 2650 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Bigram, Prosopagnosia, Mental Rotation
Document Summary
Variations in the stimulus input provide our 1st indication that object recognition involves some complexity. Recognition is influenced by the context in which the objects are encountered, by knowledge and expectation. Bottom-up process: directly shaped by stimulus by the flow of information. Top-down process: influence relying on a process of your knowledge. Common sense suggests that many objects are recognized by virtue of their parts. Vertical lines, diagonals, curves= start to detect larger units. People are efficient when searching for a target defined by a simple feature. People are slower, in contrast when searching for a target with combination of features. Apperceptive agnosia: disorder, involves an inability to assemble the various aspects of an input into an organized whole. Integrative agnosia: damage to the parietal cortex : impaired in tasks that make them judge how the features are bound together to form complex objects. Repetition priming: exposure of primes the participant for the second exposure.
