Chapter 14: approaches to the self: self-concept-is your understanding of yourself, social identity-is how you present yourself to others. Descriptive component of the self-concept: development of self-concept-first start in infancy when babies become aware of their bodies. Species who have self awareness should be able to recognition themselves in a mirror. One of the first aspects of self-concept is gender and then later age. It is usuall(cid:455) associated with shyness: self-schema- refers to the specific knowledge structure, or cognitive representation, of the self concept. Ex: if someone believes that they are masculine they will apply their understanding of masculinity to their self-concept: possible selves-describes the ideas people have about who they might become, hope to become, or fear they will become. Possible selves are like bridges from present to future and they are part of self-concepts. Ideal self-is what persons themselves want to be: ought self-a person"s understanding of what others want them to be.
