Young people either think they know it all, or think bad things won"t happen to them (optimistic bias). 1/5 still do not know that it can be passed on through sex without a condom. 1/3 do not believe that using protection will stop from spreading the disease. Health risks associated with drinking, smoking, drugs, poor academic performance leading to risky behavior after high school. Males on campus engage in more risky sexual encounters than males living off campus. Three barriers to using modern contraceptives: knowledge gap, misinformation and negative perceptions and social opposition from males. Negative psychological consequences such as low self-esteem lead to unplanned sexual behavior.
