PSYC 4750 Chapter Notes - Chapter 10: Causal Structure, Learned Helplessness, Social Comparison Theory
Document Summary
A judgment of ones capacity to execute a particular act or course of action. Estimate the likelihood that an individual can behave in a particular way: outcome expectation. A judgment that a given action, once performed, will cause a particular outcome. Estimate how likely it is that certain consequences will follow once that behaviour is enacted. They are separate, causal determinants to the initiation and regulation of behaviour. Both must be reasonably high before behaviour becomes energetic, goal directed and sustained over time. Analysis of them allows us to understand peoples reluctance to engage in activities. Interrelationships between person, behaviour and outcome at the center of expectancy motivation. Some prefer using the terminology of self-action-control (figure 10. 2) But figure 10. 2 introduces and highlights the larger superordinate construct of perceived control. It is a more generative capacity in which the individual organizes and orchestrates their skills to cope with the demands and circumstances they face.
