Crime: human conduct in violation of the criminal laws of jurisdiction that has the power to make such laws, and for which there is some form of authorized sanction. In the study of criminology, three major forms of the law must be distinguished: civil, criminal, and administrative law. Civil law: body of laws that regulates arrangements between individuals, such as contracts and claims to property. Criminal law: regulates actions that have the potential to harm interests of the state. Criminal law can be broken up into 3 types of offences: indictable, summary conviction, and hybrid. Indicatable offences are serious criminal offences that carry a prison sentence of 14 years or longer. Summary conviction offence are less serious that carry a maximum penalty of 6 months in prison.
