Document Summary
Cct chapter 11: criminology and social policy. Public policy is the government-formulated directives made on behalf of the public good to solve a problem or achieve an end. Policies undergo 5 stages in their development: identification of the problem, agenda setting or the prioritization of problems, policy formation, program implementation and program evaluation and reassessment. Social responsibility perspective defines crime as an issue of individual responsibility. Social problems perspective sees crime and criminal behaviour as resulting from poor social conditions and dysfunctional social structures. By addressing social problems and the need for improvements in the social infrastructure, it takes a proactive approach to the reality of crime. Trend toward a tough-on-crime approach bring in tougher sentences for those convicted of a criminal offence, increased mandatory sentences for gun crimes and impaired driving etc. Nurturant strategy is a crime-prevention strategy that attempts to forestall development of criminality by improving early life experiences and channeling child and adolescent development into desirable directions.
