Index crimes: means those crimes that criminologists and the police re ect crime in general - which include: homicide, rape, burglary, aggravated assault, vehicle theft, larceny theft and robbery. Crime is of cial deviance - it is wrongdoing that affects formal sanctions. The most serious crimes; rape, murder, and armed robbery represent high consensus deviance which attract the most attention and the most severe penalties. Crime is not a de ning criterion of deviance - criminality is one speci c type of deviance - but by itself being a criminal is deviant because it can stigma a person in the eyes of audiences. White collar crimes, many are against the law, but the statues of criminalizing them of wrong doing are dif cult to enforced and generally never police or attract the kinds of stigma that the index crimes do.
